A hernia can occur at any time. It occurs when fatty tissue or an organ pushes through a weak spot in the neighboring connective tissue or muscle wall. Unfortunately, hernias usually don’t get better on their own — they get bigger. In rare cases, they can be life-threatening. For example, strangulated hernias can cut off the blood supply to the small intestine. If you think you may have a hernia, it’s always best to seek medical advice. Some hernias may need repair and doctors often recommend surgery. However, not every hernia needs immediate treatment – it will depend on the size and the symptoms.
