If you regularly experience abnormal vaginal bleeding, our gynecology specialists at Ideal Body Institute may suggest you undergo a hysteroscopy to diagnose and treat the cause. A hysteroscopy is a procedure in which our gynecology team inserts a lighted, thin tube into your vagina to look inside your uterus and examine your cervix.
What is a hysteroscopy?
A hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure, in which a unique instrument, called a hysteroscope is inserted into the vagina. This procedure may be performed to perform a biopsy, remove polyps or fibroids, or to prevent excess bleeding by treating tissue with electricity, freezing, heat, or a chemical.
Why would you get a hysteroscopy?
Your outstanding health outcomes are our number one priority at Ideal Body Institute, formerly known as Georgia SurgiCare. If you have been experiencing severe cramping, heavy menstrual periods, or bleeding between menstrual periods, or some other symptoms, a hysteroscopy will allow us to understand what is behind the problems with an up-close view of your cervix and uterus. You may also get a hysteroscopy if:
- You have uterine polyps, uterine fibroids, or uterine scarring
- You have experienced problems with infertility or miscarriages
- Your doctor needs a biopsy of your uterine lining
- Your IUD has shifted and needs to be removed
- You have post-menopausal bleeding
- Diagnose the underlying cause of infertility or several miscarriages
- To remove the endometrial lining
- You are undergoing sterilization as permanent birth control
- You have had abnormal Pap test results

What is the hysteroscopy experience like at Ideal Body Institute in Atlanta?
Depending on your unique healthcare needs, you will either be given a sedative or general anesthesia for your hysteroscopy. Your cervix will be dilated, and our surgeon will then insert the hysteroscope from your vagina, through your cervix, into your uterus. Once it is in position, your surgeon will insert gas or saline into your uterus to widen it to allow for a more accurate view of the area.
If a surgical procedure is needed, we will insert tiny instruments through the hysteroscope into your uterus to perform the procedure. A hysteroscopy varies in duration depending what is required; diagnostic procedures are shorter than operative and whether the procedure is performed in conjunction with other procedures.
