A hernia can occur at any time. It occurs when fatty tissue or an organ pushes through a weak spot in the neighboring connective tissue or muscle wall. Unfortunately, hernias usually don’t get better on their own -- they get bigger. In rare cases, they can be life-threatening. For example, strangulated hernias can cut off the blood supply to the small intestine. If you think you may have a hernia, it’s always best to seek medical advice. Some hernias may need repair and doctors often recommend surgery. However, not every hernia needs immediate treatment – it will depend on the size and the symptoms.

What is a laparoscopic Inguinal hernia repair?

Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair is a surgery to repair a hernia in your groin. During surgery to repair the hernia, the bulging tissue is pushed back in, and your abdominal wall is reinforced.

Your doctor will advise you to undergo treatment for inguinal hernia if:

  • The hernia becomes strangulated (This can cause permanent damage and is a surgical emergency. Strangulated organs, usually your intestines, will die, and if not removed quickly, you can become seriously ill.) Call your doctor right away if you have a fever or nausea, sudden pain that gets worse, or a hernia that turns red, purple, or dark.
  • The hernia causes pain or discomfort, or it’s growing larger.

Inguinal hernia signs and symptoms include:

  • A bulge in the area on either side of your pubic bone, which becomes more apparent when you’re upright, especially if you cough or strain.
  • A burning or aching sensation in or around the hernia bulge.

How does the procedure work?

The surgeon makes three small cuts in your lower belly. Next, a medical device called a laparoscope is inserted through one of the small incisions. The scope is a thin, lighted tube with a camera at its end, which allows our surgeon to see inside your belly. Also, a harmless gas is pumped into your abdomen to expand the space, allowing for more room for our surgeon to see and work. Other tools are inserted through the other incisions, and the surgeon uses these tools to repair the hernia
